Rocky Road and Dissertations

June 2nd is National Rocky Road Day. Yum! Rocky Road ice cream on a hot day in June… It’s almost perfect, except for two things. Make sure you don’t make the same mistake with your dissertation…

So, what two things keep Rocky Road from being the perfect ice cream?

Marshmallows and walnuts!

That’s right before Rocky Road ice cream becomes Rocky Road ice cream, it’s already chocolate ice cream!

Isn’t that good enough? Absolutely. Every day of the week and twice on Sundays — three time on sundaes!

There’s no reason to over-complicate it. Chocolate ice cream is simple, but it works and it’s delicious.

So, how do you avoid over-complicating your dissertation?

Narrow topic? Check!

One method of data collection? Check!

Simple data analysis? Check!

Concise explanation of findings? Check!

And, we have a winner, Doctor!

Can you remember that without writing it down? Of course you can! You should be able to explain to anyone what your plan is for completing your dissertation without looking at notes. If you can’t remember your topic, it’s too complicated, and you need to be able to remember what you are going to do.

Keep it simple, and you’ll be well on your way to a delicious dissertation!
