Happiness and Dissertations
March 11th is Bobby McFerrin’s birthday. His pop sensation, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” is an anthem I encourage all my dissertation students to embrace. Here’s why…
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
— Bobby McFerrin
Most doctoral students worry about their dissertations because they inadvertently turn them into unclimbable mountains.
Your goal for your dissertation is simply to get it done. The more weight you pull onto your own shoulders, the more you worry. The more frustrating and confusing the whole process becomes. And, the longer it will take you to finish, and the less likely you will ever do so.
For dissertation students, happiness is a simple, feasible plan. An uneventful march from the wilderness of topic selection, up the slopes of Mt. Dissertation, and into the green valleys of Doctor Land beyond.
