March 5th is Fun Facts About Names Day. Here’s a quick trick to help you name your dissertation…
One of the most frequently raised concerns I hear from doctoral students is how to develop a topic and a title for their dissertations.
Here, in the U.S., we tend to name our children before we ever even see them. The child’s personality doesn’t dictate their name, but some extent their name can dictate their personality.
This simply will not do for your dissertation. In order to name your dissertation, you must first know your dissertation. You must know what your dissertation is about. You must know how you’re going to go about executing your dissertation.
- How will you recruit subjects?
- Who will those subjects be?
- What will you do with those subjects?
- What questions will you ask?
- How will you evaluate their responses?
When you know the answers to these questions, you will know your dissertation. Only then can you give your dissertation a proper name. But, by then, naming your dissertation will seem easy and natural.
Fun fact about the word, “dissertation”: It derives from the Latin, dissertare, meaning “continue to discuss.” Even the word, dissertation, itself conspires to keep you from finishing your study!
