Jack London and Dissertations
January 12th is Jack London’s birthday. Did you know that the top reason why doctoral fail at their dissertations comes right out of a Jack London novel?…
Jack London’s most famous novels, The Call of the Wild and White Fang, are both set in the Yukon. The setting is desolate and wild. No structure. No rules.
The principal characters are loners. There were others around, but they were just scenery, or worse still, antagonists.
I’m sure that you can relate. You probably consider your committee members to be the antagonists of your dissertation journey. Although that may or may not be true, there is another fact that you may have missed…
Unlike the characters in Jack London’s books, you don’t have to be a loner. In fact, when were discussed New Year’s resolutions several days ago, we discovered that going it alone is one of the biggest reasons why folks fail at their resolutions.
Instead of going it alone, surround yourself with a support network that can support you academically and emotionally. And, be sure to choose people who have completed their own dissertations, so that they have a basis for advising you.
