Drumbeats and Dissertations
November is International Drum Month. What drumbeat do you follow for your dissertation?…
Drums are the backbone of the band. They keep the music moving and often set the feel for the song. Here’s several experts taking on the drumming for dissertation students…
Before you can follow your own drummer, you have to hear the drummer.
– Dr. Srikumar Rao
Your dissertation isn’t really yours. Everyone calls it “your” dissertation, even your committee members. But, in a very real sense, it’s their dissertation, not yours.
You graduate when your committee members are happy with your dissertation. So, listen for their drumbeat. Follow their lead. It’s better to step in time to their music than your own. For now…
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
– Henry David Thoreau
Playing to the beat of your own drummer is what life is all about. The greatest successes in history were all a little… different. That’s what made them stand out. And, if that’s what makes you stand out, great!
But remember, earning a doctoral degree is about acceptance. Acceptance in a fraternity of men and women that dates back hundreds of years. First, you must fit in, then you can be yourself. Finish your dissertation, graduate, and then follower whatever drumbeat best suits you.
I think – actually, I know – that I am, without a doubt, the world’s worst drummer.
– Matty Mullins
Self-talk and confidence are hugely important to your dissertation progress. Don’t sabotauge yourself.
