Princess Leia and Dissertations
October 21st is Carrie Fisher (aka Princess Leia)’s birthday. Here are some words of wisdom from Princess Leia for dissertation students everywhere…
Looks like you’ve managed to cut off our only escape route.
— Princess Leia
Make sure that you plan the end of your dissertation before you even begin.
This is not the way most students structure their dissertation projects. Few university faculty recommend this approach. But doesn’t it make more sense to know exactly where you’re going before you start your journey?
It’s easy to find yourself out of options, unable to move forward, and unwilling to move back. Make sure that you plan your dissertation all the way through to the end before you even get started.
Don’t cut off your only escape route.
You needn’t worry about your reward. If money is all that you love, then that’s what you’ll receive.
— Princess Leia
Princess Leia wanted Han to be a true believer. Your committee might feel the same way about you and your dissertation. Resist the urge. Be mercenary. And, don’t feel guilty about it.
Your dissertation isn’t going to change the world. Don’t hold yourself to such an unfair standard.
The only value you should expect of your dissertation is your doctoral degree. A fair exchange. Nothing more.
It may be mercenary, but if it means you graduate, are you OK with that?
Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.
— Princess Leia
If you’re short on hope and need help to see your way through the long and daunting dissertation process, reach out and let me know.
But, you can’t just reach out with your thoughts.
You’re not Luke, and I’m not Leia.

May the Force be with you.
