Plastic Bags and Dissertations
Today, July 3rd, is International Plastic Bag Free Day. There are vast islands of waste swirling in the Pacific Ocean much of this waste is comprised of plastic containers of various sorts. Some of these islands are over hundred miles across! You may ask how does this much trash get stuck in one place? …And, what does this have to do with my dissertation? A lot, actually…
You see, I talk with students on a daily basis who are incredibly accomplished. Many are parents or grandparents, directors or executives, straight-A students or first-in-their-family graduates.
With all of these successes in their experience, you might think that these students are brimming with confidence, flush with success, and generally unstoppable.
But here are some of the things I hear from these same students everyday:
- I have to decide whether to continue
- I’m having trouble with my writing skills
- l honestly do not know how will l manage
- I’m not confident in the topic
- I cannot seem to keep motivated
- I can’t do this
- Maybe I’m not smart enough
These doubts and damaging self-talk create vast islands of head trash just like plastic bags in the Pacific Ocean. But, luckily, this head trash in completely within your control.
Draw strength from your past succcesses. Recognize that you have a history of overcoming challenging and that you can do it, again.
